Unless the person is an enthusiast and tinkers with the vehicle to enhance certain aspects. What hasn't usually happened is that the OEM upgrades the car for free while the owner is asleep. 

With over-the-air updates, that's exactly what's happening and one of the more important updates available for an EV is a battery software upgrade.
