SAE J3400 Technical Report Sets Roadmap for the Industry

The transition from CCS to SAE J3400/NACS (also known as the Tesla port) has been relatively quick and painless. Automakers have announced EVs with NACS ports will be coming to showrooms soon and in the meantime, Tesla's Supercharger network has seen an influx of vehicles without the Tesla badge using adaptors.

With the release of the J3400 Technical Report, the industry has a roadmap to continue implementing charging solutions that work for not just the industry, but for drivers and the community.

Charging Cables

Many of those benefits are outlined in a post by SAE J3400 taskforce chair Rodney McGee. The standard will include bring-your-own-cable AC charging to jumpstart curbside charging that doesn't require cables lying around in the street and on the sidewalk.

We also had a chance to catch up with McGee at the University of Delaware to talk through what J3400 means for the future of charging.
