Video: ChargePoints Omni Port Puts NACS and CSS on the Same Cable

As the transition to NACS charging ports and connections begins in earnest in early 2025, there's rightfully some concern from some potential new EV buyers that unless they can find a Tesla Supercharging location, they won't be able to charge.

While stations are coming from charging station providers that offer both CCS and NACS (AKA, SAE J3400) they could present issues if only a few stations support both standards and some drivers could be forced to wait for a particular station while others are available.

ChargePoint has come up with a solution for both its AC chargers and DC faster chargers, the Omni port. The chargers default to CCS but are equipped with a NACS adapter. When a driver begins a charge session the station prompts on screen them to choose which charging standard they need for their vehicle with NACS or CCS.

CHAdeMO is not supported.

The stations should offer piece of mind to EV drivers regardless of the port on their vehicle. An added benefit is that the Express Plus Power Link 2000 DC-fast charger, which will ship with the Omni port is an 800-volt architecture charging station and during our test with the system could charge at up to 400kW.

The stations are expected to start shipping to customers in September with no additional cost for the Omni port. ChagrePoint notes that the Omni port could be retrofitted onto ChargePoint CP6000 and Express Plus Power Link 2000 models at a nominal cost.

ChargePoint's Omni port is similar to Tesla's Magic Dock. At select locations, charging stations have a NACS to CCS adapter built into the stations that allow no-Tesla EVs to charge at those locations.

Some automakers also plan to give out or sell NACS to CCS adapters as their vehicles become compatible with Tesla's Supercharger network. CCS to NACS adapters like those sold to current Tesla owners will also likely become commonplace. Still it's always nicer to not have to worry about dragging an adapter around while driving. ChargePoint is hoping that by taking care of the adaptor issue, all you'll have to worry about is actually charging.
