PROJECT DESIGN ENGINEER

Level II - III

Long Island City, NY

As a Design Engineer, you will be a responsible for the design and development of a variety of automotive system components for SMP's Vehicle Control Division. Well suited to an engineering generalist, this position requires critical thinking plus broad knowledge of electro-mechanical systems and technologies. You will be responsible from initial product identification through production launch. In addition, you will assist with the process development, as well as provide support for existing product families.

Responsibilities include:

  • Designing and developing products for the automotive market.
  • Researching and applying new design & manufacturing concepts.
  • Self-educating on product related technologies in order to function as a subject matter expert.
  • Completing Bill of Materials - detailed component & assembly drawings.
  • Evaluating and approving components and final assemblies.
  • Effective communication with outside vendors.
  • Establishing product test specifications and validation requirements.
  • Support development of cost studies and help prepare business case for tooling new products or product cost reduction efforts.
  • Troubleshooting and resolving quality issues by working with production staff and applying statistical problem solving and quality principles.


To qualify, you must have a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, 3+ years of related product development experience and be proficient in using a 3D CAD software. Knowledge of automotive sensors and actuators, DFMA, PCB design, stamping/injection molded part design, engineering plastics, and other materials is preferred. Excellent oral/written communication, problem-solving, organizational, and PC skills are all essential.

The estimated salary range for this position is $85,000- $108,000.
