Michael Baker is seeking a talented Rail Design Engineering Coordinator with a specialization in freight rail projects and program management, to help make a difference in our Rail and Transit Practice. This position will directly support Michael Baker's engagement to supply program and construction management services to our freight rail client CSX Transportation as a partner in the public-private partnership with the Commonwealth of Virginia to deliver significant rail enhancement projects for the Transforming Rail in Virginia (TRV) initiative. Our team consists of on-location support in our Alexandria, VA office with technical expertise also from our Chicago, IL and other offices. The candidate may report to either office with further options to support a hybrid work engagement.

Under limited supervision, the candidate will assist a program management team with owner's representative services including plan development oversight, plan review, schedule development, cost estimating, scope and fee estimates, project reporting, meeting support, file management and administration, project inspection/site-walks, and coordinating construction observation services for railroad projects. Responsibilities include:
  • Supports the Program Management team in representing CSX in TRV interactions, including owner's representative services, design management, and construction management
  • Builds intimate familiarity with railroad manuals, policies, standards, and preferences, as well as AREMA manuals
  • Supports the design and ongoing progress of multiple projects on the program including the coordination of the project with internal railroad departments and outside stakeholders
  • Coordinates activities of project personnel to ensure project progresses on schedule and within prescribed budget.
  • Confers with project personnel to provide technical advice and to resolve problems. Coordinates with complimentary disciplines (roadway, drainage, structural traffic, public involvement, environmental, etc.)
  • Reviews plans, specifications, contract documentation, and estimates for quality and conformance with client technical requirements
  • Participates in value engineering studies
  • Reviews construction submittals for conformance with approved contract plans and railroad policies
  • Prepares project reports for management, client, or others, and modifies schedules or plans as required.
  • Collects, compiles, and analyzes project files. Organizes and maintains file system and files correspondence and other records for inclusion in reports or presentation materials and memorialization.
  • Builds intimate familiarity with railroad standards, manuals, and policies
  • Represents Michael Baker International at meetings relative to assigned projects either on site or virtually with public agency and railroad representatives as required
  • Obtains all required railroad safety certifications and trainings and support safety initiatives
  • Other duties as assigned

Occasional to moderate travel will be required.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil/Railroad Engineering or equivalent
  • 6+ years of demonstrated experience in various types of freight or transit rail projects
  • Project experience and relationships with Class I Railroads and/or Rail Transit agencies
  • Familiarity with AREMA and railroad-specific standards
  • Ability to travel to other office and job site locations
  • Experience preparing and reviewing rail design plans and specifications
  • Experience in construction phase design services
  • Experience in working on multiple projects concurrently, managing project deadlines and on-time submittals
  • Experience with office software and design/analysis software
  • Experience with Bluebeam Studio and SharePoint
  • Possess client management skills and ability to develop and enhance solid client relationships
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills and problem-solving ability
  • Strong work ethic and integrity


COMPENSATION
The approximate compensation range for this position is $83,038 to $114,191. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
