Job Description
Supernal is a company that is working to create new ways for people to get around in cities. We are designing a special kind of aircraft that can take off and land vertically, using electricity. This aircraft will help people travel safely and easily to where they need to go. We use research in autonomy, robotics, aviation, and services to create better ways for everyone to move around, whether it's for work or fun.
We are looking for a Senior Thermal Controls Engineer to help us with the development of our thermal management systems. In this role, you will use your expertise to design and implement control algorithms and electrical systems. You will make sure that our systems work efficiently and safely. You will be solving problems like controlling the temperature of batteries, managing the power of electric units, and controlling the aircraft's air conditioning system.
This is a full-time position and you will be working on-site 5 days a week. Some travel, both domestic and international, may be required.
What you'll do:
- Work with different teams to define the requirements for our thermal management systems and the control algorithms needed to run them.
- Design and optimize control algorithms that regulate the temperature in our systems, making sure they work well and use energy efficiently.
- Test and validate control systems, both in simulations and in real-life situations, and make improvements as needed.
- Stay up to date with new technologies and trends in thermal management, controls, and electric vehicles/aerospace, and use this knowledge to improve our systems.
- Collaborate with electrical and aircraft management system software to integrate control algorithms into our systems.
What you'll need:
- A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (Master's preferred).
- At least 5 years of experience working with control algorithms and electrical systems, preferably in the electric vehicle or aerospace industries.
- Knowledge of electrical system architecture, design, and analysis.
- Experience testing and debugging control systems in real-world situations.
- Familiarity with components like pumps, fans, heat exchangers, and sensors used in thermal management systems.
- Proficiency in creating controls-oriented dynamic system models using software like Matlab, Simulink, or Python.
- Understanding of communication protocols (CAN, LIN, Ethernet) and experience integrating control systems with aircraft networks.
- Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work well in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical team members.
Additional skills that would be helpful:
- Experience with thermal management system controls and electrical connections.
- Knowledge of aerospace-grade electrical components.
- Experience with GT-suite software.
- Familiarity with aerospace standards like DO-160, DO-254, DO-178, and ARINC.
We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We believe in creating an inclusive workplace where everyone is treated with respect and dignity. We do not discriminate based on factors like race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or veteran status. If you have a disability and need accommodations during the application or interview process, please let us know.

Please note that this position may require access to certain technology and/or software that is subject to U.S. export controls laws and regulations. If employment is contingent upon obtaining regulatory authorization, we will require your compliance with all conditions and limitations related to such authorization.
The base pay for this position may vary depending on your skills, experience, knowledge, and location. You may also be eligible for a bonus as part of your total compensation. The pay range for this position is between $166,400 and $232,960 USD.
