Established in 1919 and traded on the NYSE, Standard Motor Products, Inc., (SMP) is a leading independent manufacturer, distributor, and marketer of replacement parts for motor vehicles in the automotive aftermarket industry, with a complementary focus on heavy duty, industrial equipment and original equipment markets.

We are organized into two operating segments. Each segment focuses on providing our customers with full-line coverage of its products, and a full suite of complementary services that are tailored to our customers' business needs and driving end-user demand for our products. Our Engine Management Segment manufactures and distributes a full line of critical components for the ignition, electrical, emissions, fuel and safety-related systems of motor vehicles. Our Temperature Control Segment manufactures and distributes a full line of critical components for the temperature control (air conditioning and heating) systems, engine cooling systems, power window accessories and windshield washer systems of motor vehicles.

We sell our products primarily to automotive aftermarket retailers, program distribution groups, warehouse distributors, original equipment manufacturers and original equipment service part operations in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, Mexico and other Latin American countries.

We employ approximately 4,300 people in North America, Europe and Asia.

Direct and coordinated assigned engineering activities required to determine customer needs and requirements relative to products manufactured by the company with an emphasis on electronic controls, embedded systems, and PCB design. Develop and train less senior engineers by mentoring them and reviewing their tasks and projects.

  • Act as project manager for assigned projects.
  • Create designs of custom embedded systems including schematic capture and bill of material creation which will require the selection of appropriate electronic components (passive/active), integrated circuits, and microcontrollers.
  • Focus on new components, processes, and techniques to provide direction to the engineering team for future new product development.
  • Package designs into printed circuit board (PCB) layouts and off-the-shelf or custom enclosures that may be developed in coordination with mechanical engineering.
  • Plan, outline and write embedded microcontroller code, primarily in ANSI C, and PC code in Visual Studio and/or LabVIEW.
  • Create functional and design validation test plans and processes.
  • Assist and supervise internal and external test labs with all validation test requirements and use expertise to mitigate any impact of testing obstacles to overall design timeline for your projects and those of other engineers.
  • Conduct, develop, and participate in design planning and design review including DFMEAs for your projects and those of other engineers.
  • Assist manufacturing with creating or approving necessary documentation for a smooth production launch including process reviews, control plans, PFMEAs, test processes/procedure creation, and ERP database requirements such as production routing instructions and multilevel BOMs.
  • Support manufacturing and other engineers throughout product life cycle as required due to issues with part obsolescence/availability or fixture maintenance/calibration.
  • Assist customers with technical issues observed in the field or during integration of products.
  • Provide feedback and work to develop less senior engineer's skillset and abilities.
