The Sports Co. division of the AJC is seeking a Editor of Sports Co. who has an entrepreneurial spirit to lead a group of reporters with a focus of building the largest local sports site in Atlanta and driving to achieve the targeted number of paid subscribers to the sports site. This will be accomplished by utilizing current sports news coverage and add focus to providing fan insights and experiences through a multiplatform approach to reach fans of multiple sports teams. This role is highly strategic so the ideal candidate will have a vision of how best to allocate resources to drive the ultimate fan engagement. It is imperative that we work smart and scheme to create compelling content that maximizes our ability to drive paid subscribers will also achieving a large free audience to support local advertising initiatives.

This Editor of Sports Co. will work with leaders across editorial, sales, and product to develop the desired content and integrate video, podcast, newsletter and events strategies where applicable. The ideal candidate for this role will be someone who has led teams, shaped content strategy and has a proven track record of growing digital audience. To be successful, this role will need to operate with a high degree of trust, partnership and diplomacy.

This Editor of Sports Co. will report to the Senior Director of Sports Co. and will work closely with leaders across editorial, product, sales, and analytics. This role will:

  • Recommend content strategy for sports franchises. This leader is responsible for the rolled-up view of all sport franchises content so that we achieve our paid subscriber goals, our site traffic goals and help support advertising revenue goals. An important part of the content strategy is which pages/franchises are "free" to all users and how these free pages help drive users to our paid strategy. This person will also be responsible for the content provided onto the main page of the Sports Co and ensure page optimization for traffic and usage. This person will work closely with the Sports Editor to determine daily content which is intended to drive users to our paid digital strategy.
  • Staff sports franchises to drive company goals. This leader will work with Sr. Director on ideal staffing structure that supports all initiatives. This leader will be responsible for hiring reporters to certain franchises, hiring general assignment team and staffing to ensure optimum coverage 24/7/365.
  • Use data to make informed recommendations. This role will enable the AJC leadership team to assess whether we are delivering value to each sport cohort of fans, assign metrics of success, gather around those and make changes based on fan behavior. This leader is responsible for working closely with the analytics team, growth team and revenue teams to understand what metrics matter by format and by franchise as it relates to conversion and delivery on ad sales goals.
  • Build timeline across all products that enable long range-planning and day-to-day execution. This leader will facilitate the creation of long-range editorial plans that can be used by multiple divisions to make informed decisions on where our audience is most likely to convert to paid as well as support our advertising goals. This leader will facilitate the long-term planning and oversees execution of content strategies to ensure editorial needs are met, audience and subscriptions grow, and revenue and sponsorship opportunities are realized.

    • Work with all departments and assist where needed so that all AJC products are lifted by Sports Co franchises.
    • Ensuring content is fresh, fan-focused, accurate, fair, and meets style guidelines
    • Partnering with content leaders to ensure team members have robust coverage plans that can include newsletters, events, regular audio and video storytelling
    • Partnering with leaders responsible for video, audio, and production to establish robust plans aligned with team coverage plans
    • Keeping necessary talent under contract
    • Ensuring appropriate staff (contractors/part-time) is available during peak times such as gamedays
    • Demonstrating leadership skills with an emphasis on respectful inclusion
    • Collaborative with Product teams, Marketing teams, technology teams and Sales teams to achieve all company goals for subscribers and revenue.

Education and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree preferably in journalism, marketing, product management
  • 6+ years working in media organization with at least 1 in leadership type role (OR MS + 4 years of experience and 1 year leadership exp; Ph.D. with 1 year experience or 10 years without a degree)
  • 5+ years working in digital media strongly preferred
  • 5 years of leadership experience strongly preferred
  • Expert knowledge of a fan-based media operation and how it engages with fans
  • Working knowledge of the various formats (video/audio) and programming
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience working with metrics
  • Pervious partnership with product and analytics teams
