Description Are you skilled in Java development and intrigued by challenging analysis and math problems? Are you knowledgeable about space missions or instrument operations? If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL. We are seeking scientific programmer or aerospace developer to enhance and automate the commanding of space-based instrumentation. You will be joining a team of research software engineers (RSEs) to create tools that analyze and automate the observing strategies and planning activities of multiple missions, spanning national security and civil space programs. Teams are small and offer chances for significant responsibility across the project scope, from customer engagement to complex algorithm development to coding and deployment. As a member of our team, you will contribute design ideas and code to expand and maintain a Java-based suite of tools. You will work within a larger group whose role is to combine domain knowledge of space systems and science with professional software skills in a highly collaborative environment. We emphasize craft mastery and learning new skills, so there are opportunities for training and idea exchange. As a scientific developer Your primary responsibility will be creating Java algorithms and programs to model mission parameters and desired measurement strategies for the purpose of generating spacecraft commands.
You will work on two to three teams using modern software tools and practices.
You will be expected to contribute on both national security projects and NASA missions.
You will meet with sponsors and stakeholders directly and be responsible for high level presentations and detailed training activities. Qualifications You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you Have a degree in Aerospace Engineering, Math, or Physics.
Have 5+ years developing Java applications.
Have Java focused experience with object-oriented design, unit testing, and user interface development.
Have team development experience, including use of modern IDEs (Eclipse, IntelliJ, etc).
Have excellent verbal and written communication skills
Are willing and able to travel to occasional team meetings and conferences.
Hold an active Secret security clearance and ultimatley be able to obtain Top Secret clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you Have a minor or second degree in computer Science or Computer Engineering.
Have 10+ years developing Java, including DevOps.
Have an MS or PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Math, or Physics.
Have experience with object-oriented design on a medium-sized project (> 10,000 lines of code)
Have experience with one or more of the following: orbital dynamics, remote sensing instrumentation (electro-optical or radar), scientific data analysis
Hold an active Top-Secret clearance or higher.
