Department Summary: MITRE Lab's Emerging Engineering and Physical Sciences Department is seeking a senior engineer with expertise in power electronics technologies to work in a dynamic analytical and systems engineering environment focused on solving our customers energy technology and resilience challenges. This department serves as a vanguard for MITRE to meet the future needs of our customers, requiring technical excellence while encouraging creativity and fostering interests in current and emerging technologies across its diverse membership. Your future colleagues are a collegial team of energy and environmental engineers, material scientists, systems engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, chemists, physicists, and civil engineers who work across MITRE's diverse sponsors and partners. MITRE's advanced energy program provides innovative solutions to strengthen energy resilience and readiness to improve national energy security. We are expanding our program to address key challenges and opportunities such as critical energy infrastructure, battery storage, microgrids, and operational energy exercises . Roles and Responsibilities: Identification of power electronics integration and/or deployment challenges through analytical, model- base (e.g., engineering models), and experimental assessment. Characterizing the maturity, limitations, and capabilities of power electronics current and emerging technologies Evaluation of future power electronics scientific- and market-driven trends and overall limitations in unique MITRE customer environments, including materials and component supply chains. Design and evaluation of a wide variety of power and energy technologies and determination of courses of action to meet customer requirements. Framing and communicating power and energy technology performance and cost in customer applications. Transdisciplinary collaboration with diverse experts from across MITRE, our customers, and partners, providing subject matter expertise in batteries and associated technologies. Basic Qualifications: BS and 5 years of relevant experience in one of the following fields: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and/or Physics. Deep technical expertise in one or more power electronics areas, including: embedded to utility scale designs, micro and smart grid integration, system/application integration challenges, electrical power processing and distribution, performance testing and prediction, safety analysis and management, packaging and ruggedization, and manufacturing processes and quality control. Strong technical writing and oral presentation skills. The ability to conduct research and development of new energy and power technologies to meet customer requirements in a collaborative environment with both internal and external researchers . The ability to think critically and be proactive in pursuing research and problem-solving with minimal supervision. Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a U.S. government security investigation and must be able to obtain a Department of Defense SECRET clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site Preferred Qualifications: MS or PhD in one of the following areas: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and/or Physics. Extensive experience and expertise , including recent publications, in the design and evaluation of power electronics and/or their integration into applications . Basic understanding of a broad range of energy storage, energy conversion, energy harvesting technologies, power distribution, and power management systems.
