Job Description
The Joint Staff is responsible for training military forces to respond to crises around the globe. From armed conflict to providing humanitarian support after natural disasters, this force relies on joint training across all military branches, Combatant Commands, and Components to be ready to respond at a moment's notice. Globally integrated training technologies help prepare senior leaders to make decisions in complex environments, strategically integrate operations and resources globally, and develop a force capable of competing and winning against any adversary or triumph in any disaster.
Huntington Ingalls Industries supports the Joint Staff in building the technical capabilities that this force relies on. We develop exercise planning, data, and simulation systems that mimic real life environments and weapons systems. These simulation environments are integrated with live tactical capabilities so warfighters can train using the exact same systems they use in the fight. Our team is looking for a principal systems engineer to help support the expansion of Live and Virtual capabilities being integrated into CCMD exercises. We need a passionate and talented Principal Systems Engineer to be a part of our fast-paced, rapidly growing, user-driven development team that is focused on architecting, coordinating, and shaping solutions. You will aide identifying use cases, developing solutions and integration approaches, then support the orchestration and alignment of efforts across a team composed of software engineering, data sciences, simulation, cloud and datacenter engineering disciplines to deliver unified solutions.
Essential Job Responsibilities
As a Principal Systems Engineer, you will drive solutions across the program that deliver enterprise value in support of the Joint Staff J7 long-term vision.
You will work directly with senior government leadership across the enterprise and shape the long-term technical roadmap of LVC Integration for the Joint Staff.
You will be essential in exploring operational platforms, ranges and virtual training capabilities and determining integration approaches that deliver critical training gap capability into CCMD exercises.
You will also be responsible for briefing our architecture and standards to external partners to collaborate on enterprise integrations that enhance the use and employment Live and Virtual systems to better support the Joint Training community.
Minimum Qualifications
15 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 13 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; 10 years relevant experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 19 years relevant experience.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Development, or related discipline
6+ years of experience in the industry as a Software, Systems, Infrastructure or Network Engineer
Educational requirements may be adjusted for applicable work experience. Work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience
A sound understanding of object-oriented design, data structures, and software design patterns
A solid understanding in the employment of distributed DoD training simulation standards and architectures (HLA, DIS, TENA, etc.)
Understanding of Joint Exercises, and CCMD level training environments and events
Experience integrating Operational C2 systems (GCCS, Link-16, CEC, etc.) into synthetic training environments
Background in DoD training or Military experience in Maritime, Ground, Air, or Space domains.
Understanding of system architecture and experience with distributed systems and full-stack modern web application architectures
Experience developing coordinated portfolio roadmaps across multiple development programs
Strong technical communication skills that help a broad audience of senior leaders and engineers alike are able to successfully work with our program to achieve enterprise goals
Preferred Requirements
Experience in distributed DoD modeling and simulation capabilities and architectures; DIS, HLA, TENA.
Experience in DoD C4I systems and protocols. E.g. GCCS, Link-16, CEC
Experience utilizing Agile methodologies and principles as well as Agile frameworks
Experience with collaboration, development tracking, and version control systems such as Confluence, Jira, and Git
Knowledge of application abstraction and container fundamentals
Experience with container runtime environments such as Docker and container-orchestration systems such as Kubernetes
Design and development in Relational and NoSQL/Graph databases
Understanding of greater DoD training, tactics and operations or familiarity with these from the perspective of an individual Service or Agency.
Experience with DoD Modeling and Simulation
Experience with cloud environments (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud)
