Department Summary: MITRE Labs inspires breakthroughs in applied science and advanced technology to transform the future of U.S. scientific and economic leadership. In addition to executing on a rich set of programs sponsored through the six Federal Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs) that MITRE operates on behalf of its sponsors, MITRE Labs works with broader federal, state, and local government to develop robust partnerships with industry and academia to drive impact in the public interest. In support of this mission, MITRE Labs operates several Innovation Centers which focus on various technologies. The Emerging Technologies Innovation Center (ETIC) focuses on emerging technologies that have the opportunity to provide transformational solutions to MITRE sponsors in the mid to long term. A newly formed department in ETIC is the Quantum, Optics, and Imaging (QOI) Department. QOI will provide innovative solutions to address new opportunities and challenges associated with these and other novel emerging technologies. We have a strong foundation of technical expertise across the broad spectrum of these technologies that our sponsors can draw upon to develop new capabilities as well as assess their vulnerabilities and respond to emerging risks. As we expand our program in key areas for our sponsors, we are looking for a Group Leader to lead the newly formed Image Science Group. The Image Science Group Leader will support the group's staff, and champion growth of the Image Science work program which includes computational imaging, signal and image processing, image quality assessment, and computer vision, with new sponsors. The Image Science Group Leader (ISGL) will manage a technically diverse and collegial team of mathematicians and engineers. In that role the ISGL is expected to support, develop, and mentor staff. The ISGL will also work with the QOI Department Head and Chief Engineer to expand MITRE's work program into areas including physics machine learning models, remote sensing, and smart cities and transportation systems. Finally, the ISGL is expected to provide subject matter expertise in image science and related areas and work broadly throughout MITRE to support these areas. Roles & Responsibilities: Manage and support Image Science Group staff
Grow work program in computational imaging, signal and image processing, image quality assessment, and computer vision
Expand work program to areas including physics machine learning models, remote sensing, and smart cities and transportation systems
Provide company-wide subject matter expertise in image science and/or related areas Basic Qualifications: Requires minimum of: 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 6 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 3 years' experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
Strong technical writing and oral presentation skills
Excellent interpersonal skills to manage and mentor a diverse team of mathematicians and engineers
Technical expertise in image science and related technologies and the demonstrated ability to use this expertise to lead highly technical teams
Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a U.S. government security investigation and must be able to obtain a DoD Secret clearance
This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated track record of success in developing and executing against image science and related areas technology programs and initiatives in science and technology
