Michigan Technological University’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) invites applications for both tenure-track and instructional-track faculty positions. Applicants for these positions are required to have earned doctorates in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related field.
For tenure track candidates, all research areas are of interest, including space robotics, controls with aerospace applications, hypersonics, experimental mechanics, aircraft and ground vehicle electric propulsion, aerospace systems engineering, spacecraft thermal systems, NVH, and more.
For instructional track candidates, we seek individuals with expertise in mechanical and aerospace engineering in controls, systems engineering, aeronautical and astronautical technologies, as well as general knowledge in mechanical and aerospace engineering topics. Candidates will be expected to help with advising industry-funded senior design projects.
For full consideration, complete application packages should be received by October 15th, 2024; however, applications will continue to be considered until the positions are filled. Application packages must include a cover letter and curriculum vitae. We strongly encourage applicants to address the required and desired qualifications in their cover letter along with an explanation of how they will contribute to the Vision and Mission of Michigan Tech.
Michigan Tech attracts world-class faculty who enrich the educational experience of smart, motivated, and adventurous students. Applicants who are committed to promoting a sense of belonging and contributing to an equitable and inclusive learning environment for all are strongly encouraged to apply (https://www.mtu.edu/diversity/).
The MAE Department and Michigan Tech encourage women, minorities, individuals with disabilities, and veterans to apply. Our undergraduate mechanical engineering program is ranked 35th and our graduate program is ranked 70th among doctoral-granting ME programs by U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Undergraduate and Graduate Programs”. The National Science Foundation (NSF) ranks Mechanical Engineering in Research Expenditures at Michigan Tech 15th in FY2021 (latest rankings) with $22.845 million among all Mechanical Engineering programs in the U.S. We are launching a bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering in the Fall of 2025, soon to be followed by a graduate Aerospace program.
Michigan Tech is Michigan’s flagship technological university, and starting next year will be one of only four Carnegie-classified R1 institutions in Michigan. The university provides its graduates with an extremely high return on investment through its academic rigor and focus on experiential learning. Located in Michigan’s scenic Upper Peninsula’s Anishinaabe/Ojibwe lands on the south shore of Lake Superior, the university also provides a high standard of living.
