Responsibilities:
The Senior Data Scientist role will work with other members of the Data Center of Excellence (DCOE) and subject matter experts from Engineering, Asset Management, Field Operations, and Meteorology to design, build, and operationalize data solutions that produce novel insight into key problems. This role will work with large datasets generated from wind turbines, solar power plants, meteorological towers, electrical substations, and electricity markets. This role will develop an understanding of how renewable systems, electricity markets, and asset performance management function, develop the skills to identify the metrics that effectively communicate/predict performance and problems, and build the analytics to deliver insight that drive decision making at Pattern.

Key Accountabilities

The key responsibilities will include the following:

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to architect and implement scalable, sustainable data solutions by defining key performance metrics, conducting comprehensive analytics, and identifying potential limitations. Facilitate the translation of complex statistical outputs into actionable business insights.

Strategically leverage internal resources, contractors, and external service providers to design and deploy innovative machine learning or advanced analytics solutions, or to enhance existing models using state-of-the-art methodologies.

Proactively monitor, validate, and maintain machine learning models, ensuring reliability and performance consistency. Design and implement robust frameworks to detect model drift, communicating critical changes to stakeholders with transparency.

Collaborate closely with Data Engineers, Visualization Engineers, and other Data Scientists to architect and deliver end-to-end machine learning and analytics solutions, from concept through deployment.

Develop reusable components and best practices for evaluating model performance and ensuring data integrity across projects.

Provide strategic support for ad hoc analyses, including fleet performance assessments, equipment reliability studies, root cause investigations, and market evaluations, ensuring alignment with business objectives and operational excellence.

Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics, statistics, economics, physics, or engineering is required as a minimum. Master's degree preferred.

Work Experience

3-6 years of experience in data science or data analytics

Experience with statistical modelling and/or machine learning modelling

Wind power operations or electric utility operations experience strongly preferred

Additional Qualifications

Strong technical capabilities and a creative, curious, self-driven work ethic

Ability to work well with cross functional teams

Ability to travel (Up to 10% travel)

Required Technical Skills

Demonstrated strong programming skills (Python strongly preferred) with an emphasis on experience with data frame, data visualization, and data science libraries.

Demonstrated SQL skills with an understanding of joins, set theory, aggregate functions, window functions.

Demonstrated knowledge of statistical theory including Z-scores, hypothesis testing, inferential statistics, regression analysis - and application of theory appropriately to various problems.

Demonstrated ability of evaluating machine learning model performance and communicating findings of model performance.

Demonstrated ability to manage data science project scope and communicate results through reports and/or dashboards

Preferred Technical Skills

Experience with working with large files in Azure Data Lake (ADLS)

Experience with Spark in Databricks

Experience with a visualization library like Streamlit, Plotly, Shiny, and/or Power BI

Experience with writing modular Python code

Experience with Git

Experience with utility-scale data from SCADA systems or similar

Experience with wind turbine components and wind energy concepts or similar

Experience with wind turbine asset performance metrics

The expected starting pay range for this role is $89,000 - $112,000 USD. This range is an estimate and base pay may be above or below the ranges based on several factors including but not limited to location, work experience, certifications, and education. In addition to base pay, Pattern's compensation program includes a bonus structure for full-time employees of all levels.
